Rotan Melaka, Yat Heng Rattan House

Melaka holds a special place in our hearts. It has been the site of many memorable trips, where we’ve indulged in the local coffee culture and explored the museums. Ashraf, in particular, was entranced by the collection of ship models at the Maritime Museum.

But on our most recent visit to Melaka, on a Saturday in February 2023, we found ourselves at Yat Heng Rattan House, also known as Rotan Melaka. This shop, situated in the historic district of Jonker Walk, is a place of rare beauty.

We’re talking about a shop with a history of three generations of crafting and selling authentic rattan products since the 1920s.

As fate would have it, one of the grandchildren of the founder, Mr Philip, was present in the shop during our visit. We took the opportunity to have a chat with him, a casual exchange that lasted but a brief moment.

Rotan Melaka is a family-owned business that has been operating for over 100 years. The shop is run by the third generation of the family, who have continued the legacy of their ancestors and are committed to producing high-quality rattan products.

The furniture at Yat Heng is carefully crafted by skilled artisans, ensuring that each piece is not only beautiful but also functional and long-lasting.

The natural beauty of the rattan material is enhanced by the traditional techniques used by the craftsmen, making each piece truly unique.

In addition to its beautiful furniture, Yat Heng also offers a wide range of accessories and decor items made from rattan. From lampshades and baskets to wall hangings and vases, the shop has almost everything you need to add a touch of natural beauty to your home.

Following our visit to Rotan Melaka, we made our way to Coffeebar125+ for its delicious latte. We are well aware of the many coffee shops in the city of Melaka and the difficulty in choosing where to begin, but we can assure you, you cannot go wrong starting with Coffeebar125+

And for those seeking a truly singular and authentic shopping experience in Melaka, we implore you to pay a visit to Rotan Melaka.
