Suak Saudagar in Lenggong

Revisited Suak Saudagar in Lenggong on December 26, 2023. This would be our second visit with a camera. Our first visit was about a year or so ago, before Ezra was born.

Lenggong is a beautiful place, often described as a hidden gem. We agree, and we prefer for this place to remain hidden. I believe that’s why Lenggong is what it is now: clean, unpolluted, and peaceful, away from the potential consequences of over-tourism.

Lenggong was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on June 30, 2012, based on two criteria, specifically criteria (iii) and (iv), which state:

  • to bear a unique or at least exceptional testimony to a cultural tradition or to a civilization which is living or which has disappeared;
  • to be an outstanding example of a type of building, architectural or technological ensemble or landscape which illustrates significant stage(s) in human history.

This designation is well-deserved. We wrote an article about Suak Saudagar and Lenggong in general during our first visit, discussing why Lenggong is unique and what makes this place special.

Lenggong is also recognised as a Geopark, Lenggong Geopark, since 2021, becoming the second Geopark in Perak after Kinta Geopark.

A Geopark is a concept for developing and managing geological, biological, cultural, and historical heritage resources sustainably and holistically, based on a co-management approach.

The geopark concept was first developed in the early 2000s by movements in Europe, China, and Malaysia. More about what a Geopark is can be found here.
