Visiting Jadi Batek had been on our wishlist for quite some time. Reading the fascinating history of Jadi Batek made us even more excited to visit the place. Finally, on 11th March, 2023, we were able to make our way there.
So, off we went to Jadi Batek, and it took us about 30-40 minutes to arrive from our home in Sungai Buloh.
We were delighted to find ample parking when we arrived, which was probably because it was not a weekday, and the shop wasn’t as busy.
Jadi Batek, a batik shop located in Kuala Lumpur, was established in 1976 by a couple who took over the shop from their employer.
The wife, a skilled seamstress, tailored batik shirts and ties, while the husband was responsible for distributing the products across Malaysia.
During the 1970s, batik was commonly referred to as batek in Malaysia until it was standardised to batik in the 1980s.
Jadi Batek was the only batik shop in the Bukit Bintang area during the 1970s and 80s. As a result, it became one of the most popular batik and souvenir shops in Kuala Lumpur.
Locals and tourists alike would visit Jadi Batek to purchase batik shirts before going to Genting Highlands, where wearing batik attire was mandatory to enter the casino.
At Jadi Batek, we had Ashraf learn batik coloring using a basic batik canting kit that comes with a paintbrush. After seeing our kid having fun doing it, my wife later decided to try it too.
