We’ve finally published our first book, Of Muar: Pictorial Anthology. Writing and publishing books under tangankraf.com has always been part of our plan.

We want to explore topics at the intersection of history, travel, tourism, and the handicraft industry. These are the same themes we cover in our blog. Then we thought, why not print them?

I’m a photographer first, and what a feeling it was to see all those photos I’ve taken, printed on 190gsm Premium Photo Lustre paper. It beats looking at them on a screen.

These two authors and their books inspired me to start Of Muar. I read them years ago. And they stuck with me. The first one is the late Rehman Rashid. Rest in peace. His books, A Malaysian Journey and Peninsula: A Story of Malaysia.

A Malaysian Journey explores Malaysia through one man’s eyes during its early years and subsequent decades of development. Peninsula is a personal memoir that delves into the generational changes Malaysia has experienced since Independence.

The second one is Abdullah Munsyi. His book, Hikayat Abdullah. Translated into English by Anthony H. Hill. This hikayat blew my mind. From this book, I learnt about the slave trade in the Malay Archipelago. In Melaka and in Singapore to be exact.

And photography. So many photographers and magazines. Frames Magazine (readframes.com) is one of them. Masahisa Fukase, whose work I recently stumbled upon.

Of Muar is our first book. Certainly won’t be the last. So, stay tuned. We’ve created a dedicated page for Of Muar. Here. Everything you need to know is there. Take a look, and if you’re interested, purchase a copy. Here. And spread the word.
